Cycling advice
These pages will give you information on the following:
Cycle training
Cycle training for children:
We offer cycle training for all Southampton schools with children aged ten years and above. The course comprises an introduction of the basics of cycle care, the highway code and cycling techniques. This training takes place on the highway, but in a carefully controlled environment.
Courses are also available during school holidays, open to children who are unable to attend a course at their own school.
Adult and family cycling:
Tuition is available for new or returning cyclists who wish to build on their level of experience and confidence.
Off-road training sites:
There are two off-road cycle training sites in the city, located at Riverside Park and Southampton Common. These are ideal for parents/guardians to take small children to practise balance and control.

Adult cycle training
One-to-one cycle instruction is available for adults who are new or returning to cycling.
Cycle helmets
A helmet can provide vital protection if you fall off your bike. It provides protection for young children learning to cycle as well as adults.
Cycling and the law, cycle parking and security
It is important that cyclists are familiar with the parts of the traffic law which apply to them.
Large vehicles and cyclists
Manoeuvring can be difficult for large vehicle drivers, particularly in urban areas.
Safety tips for cyclists
When buying a bicycle, ensure it is the correct size to be ridden comfortably. A bicycle which is too large or too small will cause the rider safety and control problems.
