Cycling and walking
Cycling and walking are good for your health and good for the environment. The council is working to develop an integrated transport system with cycling and walking being key components in encouraging more sustainable ways of travelling.
Cycling in Southampton
The Cycling Development Officer can provide you with information about cycle routes across the city and information about the ways the City Council is working to encourage people to get on their bikes whilst reducing the number of accidents involving cyclists.
Cycling advice
The following section details information on cycling issues in and around the Southampton area.
Pedestrian Crossings
We are responsible for installing pedestrian crossings at suitable locations to encourage people to walk and to cross the road safely. Broadly speaking, there are two types of pedestrian crossings, uncontrolled (where pedestrians will have to find a suitable gap in traffic to allow them to cross safely) and controlled (where vehicles will have to stop to give way to pedestrians) and they are briefly described in these pages. The links below provide further information about the different types of crossings.
Connect2
The Connect2 project has won the People's £50 Million Lottery Giveaway. For Southampton, this means a £3 million boardwalk to help reclaim Southampton's waterfront and transform cycle and walk routes in the city.
