Electoral Register

The electoral register is the list of everyone who is registered to vote. You must be on the register to vote at elections. You are not automatically registered, even if you pay Council Tax.

Postal Voting

You can vote by post for any election, but to do so you must apply in advance. This page gives you more information on postal voting and how to apply for a postal vote.

Proxy Voting

A proxy vote is where an elector appoints another elector to go to the polling station to vote on their behalf. This page gives you more information on proxy voting and how to apply for a proxy vote.

Timetable for Elections

As there are no scheduled elections at the current time, there is no timetable to show.

Elections May 2008

Southampton voters went to the polls on Thursday 1st May to elect 16 Councillors, there was also a causal vacancy in Harefield ward where an additional vote was cast to elect a second Councillor.

Election results will be declared as soon as possible after the count which will be held after the close of poll.

Review of Polling Places and Polling Districts

A new law (Section 16 of the Electoral Administration Act 2006) has made some changes to the Representation of the People Act 1983. This means that there are changes to the way that we have to review polling districts and polling places. The review is about the places where people go to vote and the districts within a ward but not about the ward boundaries themselves.

Referenda

A referendum is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to either accept or reject a particular proposal. This may be the adoption of a new constitution, a constitutional amendment, a law, the recall of an elected official or simply a specific government policy. The referendum is a form of direct democracy and is governed by The Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000.
