Our approach to neighbourhood renewal
Our approach is shaped by the Local Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy (LNRS). The LNRS was produced by the Southampton Partnership in 2006.
Our Vision
“Southampton to be a city where no one is seriously disadvantaged because of where they live, their personal circumstances or the community they belong to and where everyone has the chance to acquire the skills, confidence and employment opportunities they need to improve their quality of life.”
The city falls behind the south east in basic literacy and numeracy skills for adults. Average salaries in the city are below the national average. We know that disadvantaged people are more likely to live in some areas than in others. The LNRS identifies the 11 Priority Neighbourhoods in the city where disadvantage is concentrated.
People in these 11 areas have face many challenges.
They are likely to have fewer educational qualifications.
Employment is lower in these areas.
When people do get a job, they are likely to be lower paid than elsewhere in the city.
The areas experience higher rates of teenage pregnancies, crime and ill health.
The city is transforming. As for all urban areas, the benefits of renaissance are not distributed equally across the city. We have to work to maximise the benefits for everyone. We are committed to raising aspirations and improving the quality of life in the priority areas.
The LNRS is linked to the City of Southampton Strategy. For more information on this strategy please see the link on the right hand side of this page.
The LNRS sets the how we will reduce disadvantage in the city. Also local people, voluntary and community groups and key agencies have worked together to prepare Action Plans for each of the areas. These set out in more detail what needs to be done in these areas so that more people think that they are good places to live and all residents have the chance to get the skills, confidence and jobs they need to improve their own lives.
Action Plans are available for the following 9 areas:
Bevois and Bargate.
Freemantle and Polygon.
Portswood & St Denys.
Flower Roads, Hampton Park and Mansbridge.
Townhill Park.
Harefield.
Lordshill.
Shirley Estate.
Weston.
The strategy and action plans are available on the right hand side of this page.
