Hate Crime and Harassment

As part of the Safe City Partnership's Community Safety Strategy (2005-2008) a strategy against Hate Crime and Harassment Strategy has been developed.

Details of service:
Hate crime and harassment is a crime considered to be caused by hatred of a certain group of people. This can because of their:
• race
• faith
• nationality
• gender
• disability
• age
• sexual orientation

You can report an incident whether you are the victim or a witness.

Types of hate crime and harassment could be:
• An act or threat of violence
• Abusive or insulting words or behaviour
• Damage or the threats of damage to property
• Abusive or insulting writing or graffiti

We take hate crime and harassment very seriously, and encourage people to report all incidents.

If you have experienced an incident it is important that you tell us about it. This can help us to help you deal with the problem.

If you need emergency help, please dial 999 immediately.

We use reports to:
• Work with the police and other agencies to stop reported incidents happening again
• Look for areas where incidents have happened, and work on ways to reduce problems in those neighbourhoods
• Support victims of hate crime and harassment
• Deal effectively with offenders

If you experience Hate crime and are:

An employee: Report the incident(s) to your supervisor, manager or contact within Human Resources. Employees who experience incident(s) within their workplace should refer to the Council's Dignity at Work Procedure - contact Human Resources for details.

If you witness an incident in the community then report it to your Hate Crime monitor. If you aren't sure who this is, then contact the Stronger communities and equalities team on 023 8083 3445.

Resident: Report the incident(s) at a choice of locations, any city council service (but particularly Housing Offices for Council tenants), Police, Race Equality Service (in the Citizens Advice Bureau), Housing Associations and University of Southampton.

Witness or third party: Report in the same way as if reporting as an employee and a resident.

If you are not sure where to go for advice in a particular situation, please contact the Stronger communities and equalities team on 023 8083 4114.

The team can provide training on issues of hate crime and harassment. There may be a charge for this. More details are available by calling 023 8083 3445
