Our service and the law
There are several laws relevant to the work of the Stronger communities and equalities team. These include:
Employment equality (age) regulations 2006
The regulations provide protection against age discrimination (direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation) in employment, training and adult education for people of all age
The equality act 2006
This act outlawed gender discrimination and harassment in all public functions. It also created a general duty on all public authorities to promote equality of opportunity between women and men.
The disability discrimination acts 1995 and 2005 – aims to end the discrimination that many disabled people face
Employment equality (religion or belief) regulations 2003
These regulations outlaw discrimination (direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation) in employment and vocational training on the grounds of religion or belief. The regulations apply to discrimination on grounds of religion, religious belief or similar philosophical belief.
The local government act 2000 – this asks councils to promote and improve the social, economic and environmental well-being of their areas
The race relations (amendment) act 2000 – this law is about eliminating unlawful discrimination, promoting equality of opportunity and good relations between people of different racial groups
The human rights act 1998 – this is about safeguarding the rights and freedoms of individuals and balance those with what is necessary for a democratic society
