The spirit of survival - lives beyond slavery

Am I Not A ManSpirit of survival is a project to commemorate the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade and is a collaboration between Southampton City Council, the university of Southampton and the confederation of African Caribbean communities

Supported by the Heritage lottery fund this project brings together young people aged 13-20 years of age, within an arena that provides a platform for addressing issues of "race" and ethnicity from both a contemporary and historical perspective and reflects the local and culturally varied heritage of the UK and Southampton.

Specifically, this platform allows young people to consider:
• Who am I?
• Where am I from?
• What have I inherited
• what is important to me?,
• what links me to my friends and family.

This will not only be achieved through work with schools, but directly with young people in communities.

The project is designed to involve young people in activities such as role play, research on the role of Southampton in both slavery and the abolition of slavery, the development of portable resource packs relating to Black history and slavery to be used in schools, a website link and a museum display linked to Black history month.
