Black in fashion

Fashion 1A fantastic catwalk show featuring hair styles and fashion from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s… right up to now.

Enjoy a unique fun-packed event full of fabulous black hairdos, clothes and make-up.

Hear also a little about black women’s experiences in Southampton and Britain during each decade, including how race relations have changed over time.

Be entertained and amazed, prepare to learn something new, come away with ideas for a new “retro” look, meet new people, and have fun reminiscing over refreshments after the catwalk display.Fashion2

The aim of this programme is to create a visual expression of how fashion and hair have been significant markers in relation to the black experience in the UK. Some argue that this has been a significant area where black women, in particular, have been able to express themselves artistically and make a statement about who they are and their place in the scheme of things.

The proposed plan is that a show is produced featuring models representing the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 00s. Each model would wear the appropriate attire for that time and the appropriate hair style for that time. A venue has been identified and we are awaiting final confirmation and we are proposing a catwalk presentation.

The venue would be accessorised with images, photographs and remembrances of the relevant era and the models performances would be accompanied by the music of the time. We envisage having a host who would provide the historical and social background of the time so that the experiences of black women can be put in context.

As this occasion is part of black history month we are hoping that contributors will do this with no financial recompense, in the anticipation that they will believe that this event will play a significant part in testifying to the role of black women in the social history of the UK.
