The aims are:

• Promote knowledge of black history and experience
• Disseminate information on positive black contributions to British society
• Heighten confidence and awareness of black people in their cultural heritage

Southampton will be celebrating Black History Month 2008 with a series of events featured in the attached pdf document available on the right.

There will be a formal launch on Wednesday October 1st in the Southampton art gallery where the mayor will open the event and young people from selected schools in different parts of Southampton will deliver brief presentations about the contributions their schools have made to black history month.

There will also be a number of activities and displays to celebrate Black history

Background

'Black History' generally includes those of African/Caribbean origin. This would include many, both 'black' and 'white', who are descended from that point in time when Africans were transported from different parts of the world to the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe and many other places.

Southampton and the slave trade

Southampton has been associated in the slave trade for over 500 years and there is a great deal of history still to be explored.

This section provides an opportunity to present a visual package of faces and places that have some connection relating to the African Caribbean experience.

The spirit of survival

Spirit of survival is a project to commemorate the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade and is a collaboration between Southampton City Council, the university of Southampton and the confederation of African Caribbean communities.
