Background
'Black History' generally includes those of African/Caribbean origin. This would include many, both 'black' and 'white', who are descended from that point in time when Africans were transported from different parts of the world to the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe and many other places.
These web pages have been created to capture information relating to the presence and influence of black people on the history of Southampton, the nation and the world. As a port Southampton has always had international connections and it has a unique and special relationship with the 'British Empire.' And, as a significant gateway to the UK from the Caribbean, it has a special place in the hearts of the so-called 'Windrush Generation.'
It is hoped that these pages will be of educational value and provide a resource for schools, students and anyone
else who has an interest in the area. There are now significantly more people in the UK with a heritage that includes those of African descent. We hope that those who may be uninformed of their ethnic and historical background may use this site as a first step in discovering their own family history.
The site also seeks to highlight some of the lesser known contributions that black people have made to Southampton from the 16th century. These can then be placed alongside better known contributions and provide another reason to further a sense of pride and dignity.
It is important to recognise our past in the present to achieve a better future.
