Cuban art and the Rastafarian connection
Lester Eloy McCollin Springer is a Cuban artist presently exhibiting his work in Southampton.
His work 'talks' about humanity, about black people and his view of Rastafarian Culture from his Cuban
perspective, that's to say, as a Cuban Rasta, and the image of the woman as a symbol of power in every senses. The images also portray the rebuilding of identity of the African people who have lost their names, tribes and homes.
Women are worshipped for giving life and this is how the African Cubans rebuild their community and the paintings depict new life and homes coming out from the woman's body.
Some painting depict pain of the once native African who has been ripped from his rightful homeland. The images illustrate divided people, sharp thorns that surround them but the focal point is on the woman, the giver of life.
Lester is in Southampton on a six month sponsored work placement.
His work can be seen at the Spice Art Studios Gallery, 16 Manor Farm Rd, Bitterne Park, Southampton, SO18 1NP.
The gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 6pm.
