Civil partnership

From 5th December 2005 same-sex couples can give formal notice of their intention to register their partnership under the Civil Partnership Act. This will allow the formation of civil partnerships to take place from the 21st December, after the 15 day waiting period has passed.

From 5th December 2005 same-sex couples can give formal notice of their intention to register their partnership under the Civil Partnership Act. This will allow the formation of civil partnerships to take place from the 21st December, after the 15 day waiting period has passed.

By registering a relationship under the Civil Partnership Act, same-sex couples will be awarded new legal rights and responsibilities, similar to those enjoyed by married couples, including:

  • Employment and pension benefits.

  • Recognition under intestacy rules.

  • A duty to provide maintenance for each other and for any children of the civil partnership.

  • Equitable treatment for life insurance purposes.

A civil partnership can only be ended by death, dissolution or annulment.
