If the parents of a child have married each other since the birth was registered the birth should be re-registered to accurately record the current legal status of the child. At this time it may be possible to change the child's surname. (Please refer to section 'Re-registering a birth).
It may be possible to change the surname of the child when unmarried parents re-register the birth because the father's details were not included in the first registration (please refer to section 'Re-registering a birth'). However, if the unmarried father's details were included in the first registration and the child was given the father's surname it is not possible to change the surname on the birth certificate to that of the mother.
It may be possible to make a statutory declaration or deed poll to change the surname of the child (you should seek legal advice). T his legal document should then be produced alongside the birth certificate whenever proof of change of name is required.
