The Gender Recognition Act 2004 came into effect on 4 April 2005.
The aim of the Act is to give transsexual people legal recognition in their acquired gender, subject to their successful application to the Gender recognition panel. The Gender recognition panel will notify the registrar general of recognition certificates issued which will establish a gender recognition register. An entry in the gender recognition register can only be made for those transsexual people whose births are registered in the United Kingdom. Transsexual people will be able to marry in their acquired gender when the change of gender is legally recognised.
