I am adopted, can I apply for a copy of my birth certificate?

If you have been adopted you can apply for a certificate of adoption which is the equivalent of a normal birth certificate but in your adopted name.

If you have been adopted you can apply for a certificate of adoption which is the equivalent of a normal birth certificate but in your adopted name. These are only available from the General Register Office, Southport (see link on right hand side of page).

If you want to obtain a certificate of your original birth entry you must be able to provide the Register Office with enough information for the correct entry to be identified.

However, if you were adopted prior to 12th November 1975, you must first attend a counselling interview before the certificate can be issued (if you were adopted on or after 12th November 1975, a counselling interview is optional).
