Graves - animal damage

Dogs

The subject of dogs in cemeteries raises strong feelings. Complaints are regularly received about dogs being allowed to foul graves, with demands that they be banned. Others say that they will take their dog with them whatever anybody says. The Cemetery Regulations take a middle view and state that all dogs should be on a (Short) Leash and be under control. All faeces should be removed. Cemeteries are included in the Dogs (fouling of land) Act 1996. Owners can be prosecuted under this Act for failing to clean up after their dogs.

Rabbits

Rabbits are a problem, particularly at South Stoneham. They can cause holes to appear overnight and can undermine graves. The also eat flowers left on graves. They are periodically dealt with. Let the Bugle Street office know if you suspect rabbit damage.

Theft & Vandalism

Unfortunately, there has been a nationwide increase in recent years, and this can be very distressing when it occurs. Children and teenagers appear to be the main problem, often stealing toys left on children's graves and causing damage to fences and buildings. When caught there is often little chance of a successful prosecution. Thieves also take floral tributes from the graves and target unattended cars - please be aware of this, and report any instances to the Police immediately, and then inform Bugle Street.
