Burial and Southampton cemeteries

We run five cemeteries in Southampton. These are:
These cemeteries are peaceful, tranquil, cared for places, sensitive to the needs of bereaved relatives.
The Old Cemetery, Hill Lane, in particular is a unique, historic and peaceful place managed to encourage wildlife whilst maintaining the dignity of the Cemetery.
The Council is keen to find ways to improve its cemeteries in the city. We need the co-operation of relatives and members of the public in order to achieve this goal. We want to work with local communities to improve levels of security, maintenance and respect for our cemeteries.
Although set up under different Acts of Parliament, the national law covering cemeteries is now the Local Authorities’ Cemeteries Order 1977 (SI 1977 No. 204). This gives burial authorities (e.g. Southampton City Council) various duties e.g. maintaining burial registers and grave plans, and various powers, e.g. to make rules and regulations regarding the conduct of visitors, the type and size of memorials, and to charge fees for burials and memorials.
