Later years strategy

Southampton City Council hasn't published an older persons' strategy because we don't want to identify seniors as a group apart from the population. Instead we have a broad strategic approach that will help us to:

  • Understand seniors' needs better and meet them through mainstream services, mainstream budgets and incorporate them in with mainstream plans and strategies.
  • Shift the balance of care towards support and independence.
  • Promote active ageing by encouraging healthy ageing, creating opportunities, tackling inequalities and improving access to information.

We also want to provide leadership by:

  • Working with seniors.
  • Implementing the seniors charter as a basis for action across the city.
  • Working in partnership across all sectors and as partners in wider networks.
  • Tackling ageism and working towards a cohesive city for all ages.
  • Setting an example wherever possible.
