What is it?
Dried leaves of the tobacco plant, which include the highly addictive ingredient nicotine.
How is it taken?
Most commonly smoked, via a cigarette, cigar or pipe. ‘Snuff’ can be sniffed up the nose

Illegal to sell to under 18s
Effects
• Reduction of stress, anxiety and boredom
• Increased concentration
• Mild rush and ‘buzz’
• Increased blood pressure and pulse rate
• Dizziness, nausea and coughing fits for first timers
Risks
• Bad breath
• Stained fingers and teeth
• Coughs and chest complaints
• Smokers stand a greater chance of developing diseases such as lung cancer, throat cancer, heart disease and bronchitis
• Death – smoking results in the premature death of over 100,000 people in the UK every year
Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals including ammonia, lead, formaldehyde and cyanide
