ECSTASY
Adam, brownies, burgers, doves, e, m&ms, mdma, pills, shamrocks

What is it?
A man made ‘psychoactive’ drug containing a chemical substance called MDMA

How is it taken?
Tablets or capsules which are swallowed but can also be crushed and snorted or smoked.

Legal status
A Class A drug; maximum penalty for possession is seven years in prison, for dealing, life in prison and an unlimited fine – or both.

Effects
• Intensified emotions, sounds and colours
• Rush of energy lasting between three-to-six hours
• Reduced social inhibitions
• Feelings of warmth and love for everyone around
• Dilated pupils
• Tingling feeling all over
• Increased heart rate and body temperature

Risks
• Overheating (especially at clubs)
• Dehydration
• Anxiety and panic attacks
• Confusion and paranoia
• Tablets sold as ecstasy could contain other ingredients instead – you never know what’s in it or how you’ll react
• Risk of death


Ecstasy was first patented in Germany in the early 1900s as a chemical for use in the manufacture of a drug to control bleeding from wounds.

Ecstasy and speed together can lead to anxiety and paranoia.
