What is it?
A coarse, bushy plant, the leaves, flowers, seeds and stem of which can be dried, scraped, pressed, chopped or mixed
How is it taken?
Smoked, via a joint or pipe, or eaten in cakes or cookies, sometimes dissolved and drunk in a tea
Legal Status
Reclassified from a Class B to a Class C in 2004, but is STILL ILLEGAL. Maximum penalty for possession is two years in prison, for dealing, 14 years
Effects
• Relaxation and reduced inhibitions
• The giggles
• Sexual arousal
• Bloodshot eyes and a dry mouth
• Stimulation of appetite (‘the munchies’)
• Dizziness, disorientation and loss of coordination
• Nausea and vomiting
• Loss of motivation
Risks
• Smoking can worsen asthma and cause damage to the lungs and throat
• Linked to anxiety, paranoia, depression and panic attacks
• There is also evidence that using cannabis may contribute to a risk of developing psychotic symptoms, including schizophrenia
• Affects fertility in men and women
Cannabis is one of the most commonly used recreational drugs on the planet. It has been banned for personal use in the UK since 1928, and it remains illegal to this day
