About the Drug Action Team

The Drug Action Team (DAT) is a sub group of the Safe City Partnership and is supported by a small team of commissioning and coordinating officers based in Southampton City Council. The DAT partnership and support team are responsible for delivering the ten year National Drug Strategy “Tackling Drugs” here in Southampton.

Members of the DAT partnership include Southampton City Council, Police, Probation, Health Authority representatives, service users, carers, and voluntary sector groups.

The DAT support team works with other local agencies who deliver drugs services in Southampton to make sure that the work they do is coordinated and effective.

The DAT oversees the way that money is spent on drugs services and how services are provided – working within the four aims of the National Drugs Strategy
• Treatment
• Young people
• Communities
• Reducing supply

The DAT works to make sure that advice, information, education, early intervention and treatment is provided for young people (under 18) for all substances, including drugs, alcohol and solvents.

The DAT commission a separate similar substance service for young people aged 18-25 called the Transition Service. It is designed to give them the choice between services for young people and services for adults.

The DAT commissions drugs specific services for adults. The Southampton City Primary Care Trust commissions alcohol specific services for adults.

DAT work involves:
• Analysing what services are needed locally and then designing the services
• Finding Providers to deliver these services
• Making sure that drugs services perform well
• Co-ordinating the work of all the drugs services so that there is a full range available in the city
• Ensure communication between drugs services and agencies who need to know about substance services, through plans, reports and activities
• Offering training courses to our partner agencies
