Door Supervisor Licensing

Before 4th June 2004, door supervisors in Southampton were licensed by the city council, but this function was passed in its entirety to the Security Industry Authority, a Home Office agency, under the Private Security Industry Act 2001. It is illegal for anyone to act a door supervisor without being licensed by the SIA.

Regulation of the Security Industry
The Security Industry Authority's remit, under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, is to regulate the following activities:

  • Door supervisors - both in-house and supplied under a contract for services

  • Vehicle immobilisers on private land (wheel clampers) - both in-house and supplied under a contract for services

  • Security guards - where they are supplied under a contract for services

  • Key holders - where they are supplied under a contract for services

  • Close protection operatives (bodyguards) - where they supplied under a contract for services

  • Cash and valuables in transit operatives - where they are supplied under a contract for services

  • Public space surveillance closed-circuit television (CCTV) operatives - where they supplied under a contract for services
