Reading Slam

Nickhornbymayor2Bestselling author Nick Hornby delighted hundreds of fans when he paid a visit to Southampton to support the City’s Reading Slam. He entertained everyone with readings from his latest novel ‘Slam’, answered questions from the audience and later chatted to fans during a very popular book signing.

The event, held at the Turner Sims Concert Hall attracted a diverse audience including the Mayor and Mayoress of Southampton. They are pictured with Nick Hornby.


Join in the Reading Slam
Southampton’s Reading Slam is organised by Southampton Library service in partnership with Penguin Books. The aim is to get everybody in the city to read and talk about ‘Slam’ the latest book from Nick Hornby.

800 free copies of ‘Slam’ are now in circulation across the City. If you find a copy take it, read it, discuss it and pass it on to family and friends, leave it for someone else to find or return it to your local library.

Inside each book will be a simple guide to taking part and an opportunity to share your thoughts about ‘Slam’ using the online comments form.

Slam – the novel
Sam is sixteen and a skater. Life is ticking along nicely for Sam: his mum’s got rid of her rubbish boyfriend, he’s thinking about college and he’s met someone. Alicia. Then a little accident happens, one with big consequences for someone just finding his way in life. Sam can’t run (let alone skate) away from this one.

If you can’t find a copy, don’t worry, ‘Slam’ and other copies of Nick Hornby’s books can be borrowed from libraries in Southampton.
