Green Flag Introduction
Great success for parks and green spaces! Southampton has won four Green Flag Awards recognising our excellent parks and green spaces. This year Riverside Park received the award for the first time- a great achievement for the Friends and park staff who have worked very hard to improve the park in the last year.
Southampton Common has retained the award for the second year and Central Parks and Mayfield Park have kept the award for the 5th year in a row. A big thank you to everyone involved who has helped achieve these awards.
And for the first time the Shirley Warren Community Garden received a Green Pennant. The Green Pennant is awarded to high quality green spaces managed by community groups.

To meet the standard
To meet the Green Flag Award standard the judges are looking for green spaces to be healthy welcoming places, that are safe and secure, clean and well-maintained and sustainable. The management of the green space must involve the community, pay attention to conservation and heritage and include marketing of the site.
Developing a vision
We are currently developing a vision for your parks and green spaces - a key target will be to achieve the high Green Flag standard in even more parks and green spaces across the city by 2010. If you have any comments about your local parks then please click on GreenSTAT.
What is Green Flag?
The Green Flag Award is the national standard of excellence for parks and green spaces. The scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards and creates a benchmark of excellence in green spaces.
