Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle 2009: 10 May

Supported by the City Council, the Southampton-based international charity, the Sailors’ Society is gearing up for a new annual bike ride through the maritime city of Southampton and Hampshire countryside.
The charity is challenging free-wheeling fundraisers of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to experienced enthusiasts, to raise money with pedal power. Sponsorship raised by cyclists will directly fund welfare facilities across the world to transform the lives of seafarers and their families in need.
The Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle was due to take place on the 5th October 2008 but this has been postponed and will provisionally take place on Sunday 10th May 2009.
Starting and finishing on the waterfront at Mayflower Park, cyclists have three circular routes to choose from: 10, 25 or 45 miles. Port owner ABP are also offering free short bike tours through Eastern Dock, part of the working port which is normally closed to the public. This flat four mile round trip will include a photograph stop at Dock Head to admire views across the Solent.
There are fantastic prizes to be won through taking part and fundraising. Every cyclist who raises over £50 sponsorship could win a weeks holiday for up to six people at a Hoburne holiday park in Devon or Cornwall. The highest individual fundraiser will win a trophy and a year’s membership at Spirit Health Club, Southampton.
Every cyclist will receive a registration pack, t-shirt, goody bag packed with munchies and discounts, medal, free bike tour to Dock Head and the chance to win fantastic prizes!
Throughout the day spectators and cyclists can enjoy entertainment at Mayflower Park with Mountain Bike stunt displays, Bike Doctor, radio road show, bouncy castle, face painting, stalls, great local food and a licensed bar.
Every cyclist can directly help to make a difference to seafarer’s lives by raising as much sponsorship as they can. Companies are being encouraged to enter and compete to win Highest Corporate Fundraising Team. This event is an excellent opportunity for a fun, team building and social networking activity.
The charity fundraiser is sponsored by many of the city’s companies besides the named sponsor, professional services firm Deloitte. Main sponsors include national legal firm Blake Lapthorn and port owner ABP, who have also pledged their support for the Sailors’ Society by making them their Charity of the Year.
