Search the Collection
The Southampton City Art Gallery has a Permanent Collection of over 3,500 works of international reputation. The Collection, which spans six centuries from the Renaissance to the present day, has been 'Designated' by the Government as having special national significance.
The Art Collection Database is a complete catalogue of all these works, which offers a wealth of information suitable for both general interest and research. It is hoped that the Database will raise awareness to the Collection and give access to this remarkable holding of fine art, sculpture, ceramics, video installations and wall drawings to as many people as possible.
The Art Collection Database was created through funding from the Designated Challenge Fund, administered by Resource, the Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries.

Tips for a successful search
It is possible to search the Database by using either the artist name, title of work, subject matter or accession number.
- In the 'Simple Search' option, you do not have to enter criteria on every field. It is possible to use a keyword to search for a title of an artwork, or just a few letters of an artist's name.
- If you are unsure of the correct spelling of an artist's name, it will be best for you to use the 'Search by Artist' option.
- If you do not have a particular artwork or artist in mind, then use the 'Search by Subject' option instead; as this allows you to choose from a list of subjects represented in the Collection that may be of interest to you.
- If you encounter technical problems when using the search, please report this to us by emailing webmaster@southampton.gov.uk
