Home Improvement Loans

We have introduced the Home Improvement Loan to help people who cannot afford to carry out the essential repairs required to make their home a decent home to live in. The loan is available for properties which fail the government’s Health and Safety Hazard Rating System. This could include roof repairs, dealing with rising damp and replacing dangerous electrics and heating or insulation.

The Home Improvement Loan is an interest free loan with no monthly repayments.

In most cases the loan is only repaid to the council when the property is disposed of.

To be able to apply for a Home Improvement Loan you must: -

• Live within Southampton city boundary.
• Be an owner occupier with no additional home.
• Be in council tax band A, B, C or D.
• Be on income support, in receipt of Income Based Job Seekers Allowance or Guaranteed Pension Credit.
• Have a low level of income. (This will be established by the council using a standard means test)
• Live in a property that is at least 10 years old.
