Details of service:
If you want to directly swap your property with another Southampton City Council or housing association tenant, you can generally do so through the mutual exchange register.
To add your details to the mutual exchange register, you need to fill out the mutual exchange form and hand it in at Gateway on or your Local housing office. These forms are available from Gateway. Once you find a property that you are interested in, you contact the tenant to discuss the potential swap. If you both agree to go ahead with it you need to complete a mutual exchange application form and return it either to Gateway or your Local housing office.
Once we get your form we will contact you to arrange some checks on the property (e.g. repairs, damage). If everything is alright the swap will proceed.
You are not permitted to give or receive money to secure an exchange, if you do so you could be evicted.
Once your details have been entered on to the exchange register, they will only be kept there for a period of 6 months. If you would like to extend or shorten this period you must let Gateway know.
The city council does not write the property descriptions and cannot guarantee the accuracy of these.
We update the register every month.
