Details of service:
During 1999/2000 the DETR funded heavy metal monitoring around 30 industrial sites in the UK. Netley was chosen as part of this study, due to its location 2 km downwind of the Esso Oil Refinery at Fawley, on the opposite side of Southampton Water. Southampton City Council was chosen as the local site operator to manage the day to day running of the monitoring equipment. The monitoring station was located on the roof of a single-storey building within the grounds of a residential home, immediately overlooking Southampton Water. Weekly filter samples were collected and sent to a laboratory to analyse for Cadmium, Nickel, Arsenic, Lead and Mercury content. The levels monitored were well within the Air Quality Standards and EU limit values.
Annual mean levels monitored:
Cadmium | Nickel | Lead | Mercury | Arsenic |
0.20 ng/m3 | 2.40 ng/m3 | 0.012 ug/m3 | 0.04 ng/m3 | 0.90 ng/m3 |
