Young Carers Project
Young Carers are children and young people under 18 years whose lives are affected by caring for an unwell or disabled family member. They care for a parent, grandparent, brother, sister or another family member. The person they care for may have a physical or learning disability, a long term illness, mental ill health, or have difficulties with drug or alcohol use. They care in many different ways. The help they give may include shopping, cooking, lifting, laundry, personal care, keeping an eye on someone, cheering someone up and looking after brothers and sisters.
We aim to identify young carers under 18 who live in Southampton, support them, raising the awareness of the needs of young carers and their families and undertake consultation with Young Carers including advocacy on their behalf for services.
The Young Carers project offers:
• Information to Young Carers
• Opportunities to meet with other Young Carers
• Youth groups for siblings to gain peer support
• Befriending
• Life coaching
• School groups
• 1 to 1 support
The project is based on valuing people, listening to young people, self-determination and service user involvement. All staff and volunteers use a non-judgemental, anti oppressive approach.
The Young Carers project covers the whole of Southampton. Young Carer, their family, Social Services, Voluntary Sector, Education and Health, can make referrals.
